Buying Skies & Boots?

Hi all,

So how many of you skiers are buying in Fernie? (and how many of you are bringing your own?)

Any what type of ski are people considering? Are you thinking of getting a ski mainly for On Piste or are you going for a Freeride ski (more 50/50 between On and Off Piste)?

Here's a list of skies that seem to be recommended:

On Piste:
Head C220i
Rossignol Zenith Z5
Volkl Supersport 5*
K2 Omni 4.5

Freeride:
K2 Apache Recon
Rossignol Bandit B2
Volkl Unlimited AC4
Nordica Hot Rod Eliminator XBS

And what about costs? Does everyone have a budget? From the skies listed above the Rossignol are the only ones that don't normally have a binding included in the price hence why their skies seem a little cheaper Wink

I guess boots will be based on what suits your feet best Confused !

Are there any other skies people would recommend? Fischer skies are suppose to be great also but Anna( from Nonstop) gave me a list of shops in Fernie (3 in total) and I've called them all...they don't stock Fischer but they do stock the ones mentioned above!

Ok I'll stop talking now Shocked ! What do the skiers amongest you think Razz ???

Fernie is a great powder resorts, you need ski's with i'd say roughly 85mm or more underfoot.

i will be bringing my LINE MOTHERSHIP flites (a canadian ski company) and they are by far the best ski i have ridden and clocking in at 94mm underfoot will suit the piste but more so fernie's legendary powder. They are a very soft forgiving ski too.

I also have my amarda ar5's to rock the park and groms with.

Yeah ride twin tips, they go anywhere do anything these days.

Skis

I was looking at investing in a pair of Volkl 5*s, I don't think they're going to be very well suited of off piste or powder Rolling Eyes

Hi James/Julian

Thanks for your replies. James, that seems like a very wide ski for on-piste skiing. Most freeride skies have a width of about 78mm. You mention they (Line Motherships) are a forgiving ski but are you expecting that we won't do much on-piste skiing and more powder skiing?

Yeah Julian I looked at those as well but they seem more suited for on-piste. I'm looking either the Rossignol Bandit B2 or K2 Apache Recon...but that's why I started this post, to see what people think. The Volkl 5* have gotten great reviews too!

Oh what to do, what to do Laughing

In a few years the norm will be around 90mm underfoot for all mountain skis is my bet, they handle perfectly well on the piste, i ride them most days at work and can easily carve. If you have any worries just give me a hsout out there you can have a bash on them, once you get used to a fat ski its just the same really.

Volkl AC4 Vs. K2 Apache

The Volkl Unlimited looks pretty wicked 82mm Underfoot. But then the K2 Apache recon looks awesome too, but with 78mm Underfoot Grrrr what to do!? Is 4mm going to make much of a difference?

I think I'm just going to speak with the locals at the shops, they obviously will know best Confused

I also need to buy skis when we get to Fernie. I've not owned a pair before, but seem to recall reading somewhere that the instructors will be on hand to advise when we get to the shops (though I may have imagined that!?). Confused

That's what I'm relying on anyway - not sure how much you can read into magazines and online reviews - ideal skis for Fernie may well differ from just about anywhere else (and hopefully by the end of the course we'll all be good enough to use Fernie-skis pretty much anywhere Cool ).

Into the last two weeks of work now... can't go quick enough... Very Happy Rolling Eyes Very Happy

all mountain ski's are getting fatter every year, this year they are up to a max of 140mm i think but they are rare and basically just for off piste.

fatter ski's are just as good to carve with, you just have to work them a little more, nothing you can't get used too, mine are 94mm underfoot i love them to pieces.

I really wouldnt go much thinner than 83-85 underfoot or i will tease you. (just playing)

But like i said earlier if nayone see's me around and would like to have a bash on them feel free, might help you decide a bit faster

Prophets

Hey James,

I was looking at the Line Prophet 100s...
They look pretty wicked, but do you think 100mm underfoot is going to be a bit fat for piste? The K2 Apache Outlaw looks good with 88mm underfoot, that seems more piste friendly?

100mm now your talking, if i could afford another pair of ski's i would be buying the prophets, my friend let me have a go on them and i loved them, boring graphics mind.

To be fair they i'd say there a bit fat for piste but once you get used to them you would be able to handle them easily on it, and when you go into the back country you'd have so much float you'd love it.

Not really looked into the K2 ski's mind, another good strong ski is the rossi BC, just avoid salomon foils they are the gaper ski of this year.
