How Much Money ?

Hey guys

Was just wondering how much money you were planning on taking with you? eg how much you are planning to spend on essentials such as food and drink ?

Hey Phil

Cheers for the reply, I was thinking along similar lines. Just trying to get a feel for what other people are doing. Might give someone at NSS a ring, I will let you know what they say.

When I was in Red Mountain in 04/05 beer was basically about the same price as in the UK, slightly cheaper actually, eating out on the hill was sensibly priced, cheaper than a French resort anyway, the supermarkets were again similar to the UK so i guess if you factor in what you might spend in UK in a week you are about right.

Plus spare cash for new shiny skis Very Happy Shocked

I wouldn't rush Philip, get around a couple of shops and see what you can try out to start with - for the MTM course you might want a good all mountain ski (I reckon you wouldn't go to wrong with an Apache Recon or Chief from K2) and its worth trying out a few to make sure you get the right ski for terrain, conditions and of course you!

Yeah i guess test driving some when iam out there, for a couple days wouldnt harm. I was recommended to try the rossignol bandit b2's, ive used b1's in the best when ive hired. Anyone know what the b2's are like as an all mountain ski?

They are kind of often thought of as the benchmark all mountain, solid if slightly characterless performers.

I had a pair of exrentals when I went out to Red and they were good but fell out of favour with me when I got a pair of Atomic Metrons as the Atomics were better on piste and only struggled a little off piste because of their weight.

I gave my B2's to a friend in the end as I have big powder skis for big powder days ( Very Happy ) and the Atomics for piste and smaller days ( Smile )

Last season the B3's were getting better comments from people I spoke to - the extra stiffness helped on piste and they were fatter underfoot for off piste.

Everyone who skis K2 Apache Recon's rates them and whilst I have my doubts plenty of people love Salomon skis too - I enjoyed an old pair of 1080's I used a few times last year, great light fun ski but hardly piste oriented unless it was the piste on the way to the park!

Good advice Paul, thanks.

I for one was wondering what the best thing to do for skis was, being someone who has always hired.

What's the deal with trying before you buy, do you just pay for a few day's hire and chop and change your skis. Will the shops do you a deal on hiring costs if you are going to buy from them?

I think we should be pretty good with borrowing demo skis - the local ski shops when i was in Red were well friendly and once we got in with them (which didn't take too long) they were pretty happy to give us skis to try - especially if the snow was good and we werent going to hit any rocks!

NSS have a pretty good rep in Fernie I think so I am sure they have a decent tie in with the locals.

We shall see.....!

It looks like the shops are going to be pretty packed when we get out there then. I'm buying skis and bindings out there too, seems a waste to not use the expertise of the 'lercals' (sorry that's just a Hullian thing). I seem to be spending a lot of time looking at skis and weather online when I should be working though, anyone would think that these exams didn't need to be signed off for use in December!

As far as the money is concerned as much as possible, it's one thing I really don't want to have to worry about have had enough of that over the last 3 years. A ton a week sounds like a good amount, I'm sure it said around that on the website last year but haven't looked since booking really. I think a 'heavy night contingency' or something to that effect would be a good idea though, and then there's always the plastic friend should all planning fail.
