 • Fernie Terrain Parks
Hi, this is a quick note to pass on an update from RCR - the owners of Fernie Alpine Resort - regarding Fernie’s terrain park for this season.
RCR recently announced that the terrain park is going to change this year so that there will be lots of rails and boxes but no man-made jumps. They have decided to make this change due to safety concerns because of the level of serious injuries that were taking place in the park. Needless to say, this news came as a big shock to me and the NONSTOP team and I immediately made my views clear to RCR that I felt they were making an unwise decision. Having spoken to senior management at Fernie I began to understand the reason behind their decision and can see why they are so keen to cut down the number of serious injuries that were occurring and which no amount of waiver forms were going to decrease.
Since the announcement RCR have received a vocal barrage of complaints from disappointed skiers and riders which has taken them completely by surprise because the percentage of people that used the Fernie park was seriously low (definitely well below 5% of mountain users). Personally while I consider it a shame, for me and the vast majority of people at Fernie it won’t change the Fernie experience because Fernie’s park never compared to the natural terrain that the resort is famous for. There are so many natural jumps and hits in the resort boundaries from small kickers to properly large booters and cliff drops. Of course it’s a shame that this decision has been made - everyone likes a park session now and again - but I reckon our past clients (and me included) probably spent less than five days sessioning the park last season. It’s not what Fernie is all about – you can’t ride park on a powder day!!
We have had confirmation from both the CSIA and CASI that there is more than sufficient terrain to learn and demonstrate your freestyle skills on for us to run the Park and Freestyle coach courses that some clients will be keen to take. So in summary your course with NONSTOP and your personal progression will not be affected.
On the positive side RCR are committed to investing more in the rail park and have confirmed that the following features are planned for the Fernie Rail Park:
Intermediate & Advanced Rail Park:
24’ Long Flat
24’ A Frame
24’ Double Kink
24’ Flat Down
24’ Rainbow to Kicker
24’ Battleship Box
24’ C-Bow Box
Novice Rail Park:
8’ Straight Dual 4” Pipe
12’ Straight Dual 4” Pipe
14’ Straight Dual 4” Pipe
6’ Rainbow 6” Box
8’ X 2’ Box
8’ Straight 6” Flat
8’ Box
I look forward to meeting you all in Fernie and enjoying some epic powder days with you and our instructors.
Cheers,
Rupert
