 • A new kit thread...
Has anyone else started buying shiny new toys for Whistler yet?
Took a trip up to Lockwoods last night, and got new boots fitted. Was amazed at how different getting boots fitted properly is to how EB fitted my last pair! no messing arround trying on loads of shells, just a case of the fitter going over my feet with a micrometer then coming out with the perfect boot (and then of course all the time getting the custom footbeds done, and fitting the inner.
Think i was really lucky, as the Nordica Supercharger Blower has to be the best looking boot this season (not to mention its red & white and matches my SL9s perfectly )
Also grabed a nice Atomic 2 ski bag so i can get both pairs of skis out to Canada (once ive boght the 2nd pair) without looking like a snowboarder
So what have the rest of you been buying? Or what are you thinking of getting?

Im going to be buying most of my kit out there, boards + boots for sure, so that proberly means bindings also. Goin to pick up some threads from england tho before i go, and the usual socks etc.
Reason im buying my board etc is its alot cheaper and you can go back to the shop for advice, refunds and anything else really. There always really helpful... or the ones ive been to.

I did think that, but with ski boots its allways good to go to someone well recomended. And the guy who fitted mine (an english chap from Cham') was hugely well recomended!
As for the new skis, cant make up my mind if i will buy before i go out or once im out there.
One ski on my shortlist which im very near to buying will be cheaper if i buy direct from the uk distributer, but that means i cant test it properly (cant really get a feel of a powder ski in Xcape, and it is a bit shorter than i would usually be looking for in a powder ski.)
With buying in the US & Canada a lot depends on the make of ski, a lot of Europian brands are a fair bit cheaper buying from Euroland (even with the postage)
The other thing with the sort of ski i am looking at (I want something just for Powder & Park) is that you really need to test them on a powder day.
and the last thing you want to be doing on a powder day is messing arround heading back down to the ski shop to swap for a different ski to test lol...

Thank God someone else can't help themselves. I have to be physically restrained when I walk past a ski shop/surf the net/do just about anything else that offers the chance to spend money on shiny new kit. Sorted boots out last season. Stuff started to fall off my old ones so bought some Nordica Olympia Speed Machines. Not dissimilar to Richard's but blue and green. Only used them for one week this year but they are the most comfortable boots i've tried despite really firm feel. Had thermic footbeds installed because i'm a big sissy and my feet get soooo cold.
Bought two pairs of skis in the sale at the end of last season. Got all mountain Volkl Attiva AC3s (not tried yet) and some K2 Burnin' Luvs. No sensible reason for the latter purchase since they won't help me much in anything deep (hence the AC3s) but the K2's are amazing at speed on the hard pack. Tried a pair in March and couldn't wipe the smile off my face the whole week.

Really strugeling not to go really mad, a new jacket is tempting me despite really not needing one!
Was loving the idea of one of those little GPS thingies that shows you what runs you have skied and how fast you went (just becacuse silly toys like that are allways fun!)
2 pairs of skis (or better still pairs) is definatly the way to go. Just so long as we know in the morning if we are going to be on or off piste that day! Certainly dont want to be trying to take the Atomics off piste again!!!
At least with Whistler's snow record we shouldnt have to worry about rocks smashing up the bases!

Richard - too right - - no need to worry about base damage at whistler unless the weather gods misbehave or more likely you huck one onto a hidden rock, came back from whistler last year and didn't have a scratch! (obviously not trying hard enough )
Claire - I too have a dangerous addiction to internet skigear porn, can't stop looking at sh*t I don't need!
What I do need are new gloves - got my eye on a pair of leather hestra's gortex thingys - did a 'dave murry' ski course last year in Whistler and the instructor we skied with kept a pair of yellow Marigold washing up gloves in her pack for when her gloves gave up - I kid you not !!!! Even gortex gives up in the end under the whistler onslaught!
2 ski's is def the way to go!!! gonna take my 2 year old Fischer RX8's for blasting on piste and the gates. I'm gonna demo new ski's out there, there was plenty of shops offering this last year - really fancy this years Head Monster range - 82's appeal, but probably recon the 78's will be a better all mountain ski - particularly for demoing those plough, I mean wedge turns!
Also need new boots - I've got very narrow "pencil" feet, I'm currently in Lange comps - but the liners are starting to pack down
I tried those zipfit aftermarket liners last year, nice idea but just not suited to my lange low volume shells, they packed my toebox so bad that my toenails went black and fell off!! 6 months later and they're still tender - not nice .
I'm tempted by the this years new head 'Raptor' boots (grrrrrrrrrrr.....) which my local boot fitter is due to get in any day now - but must resist! My better sense tells me to buy out there so that I can get work done throughout the season as needed.
Oh and I might buy a helmet - never skied with one before, but every one seemed to have one in Whistler last year -peer pressure anyone?
So there you go....... I don't need a lot. Who am I trying to kid!!! I think it might be time to re-mortgage the house!

Ive been skiing with a lid since BUSC the other year where you had to whare one to do the GS. Ended up just carrying on using it afterwards (once you buy a helmet you just know that the day you dont use it you will have a major fall!)
Need to get a new one when I get out there as had a really bad fall on plastic earlyer in the year (resulting in snapping a ski!) which smashed it up a bit...
Hearing that about gloves I think im going to have to invest in another pair (I have one pair for very very cold, and one for normal skiing, but if they are going to be soaked another wont hurt!)
Dont really find the internet that bad for making me spend money, its more going into EB while waiting for mates to arrive at xscape, or reading mags... (incidently the next issue of Fall-line has their rather excelent gear guide (so intrested to see what they make of this seasons fat skis.)

 • Gear
Hey guys man, I know wat you mean. Ive just started work at my local two seasons and I just keep staring at the shiny new gear. Plus im surrounded by snowboarders, dont get me wrong I like snowboarding but it just makes me wanna ski soooo bad. Im lucky enough to be going on a few demos thru work so that will be good to test the flex and edges and the wot not but like you said I wont be able to test the capabilities in the deep stuff. I really fancy some twins so I could venture into the park once in a while too, and two pairs would be nice but im a bit tight budgeted. But hey I can still dream.lol

Have a look at the Scott Punisher, and High Soceity FR
both are fat enough for ripping powder, twin tiped, and when I tested the 08 models of both fantastic on piste.
Only thing that put me off them is that i all ready have a fantastic piste ski.

Yer I had thought about the punishers, also the volkl bridge. Dunno about boots tho. I Love the look of the spk pros and the dalbello rampage but they are a bit park specific. however they were the comfiest boots ever!

I can resist no longer. I have decided that I'm going to give in at some point so doing it sooner is justifiable on the grounds that it satisfies my immediate need for gratification and makes the whole trip seem nearer. Yeah, right.
One purchase (more accurately described as a series of purchases) that I absolutely can justify is Icebreaker base and mid layers. I have mentioned before that my feet get very cold given half a chance. Same goes for the rest of me so i've blown a huge chunk of money on some sheep shavings to avoid hypothermia. Waiting for some really cold weather here so that I can stand in the garden in my undergarments to test them properly. Never fear, I get on very well with my neighbours....come to think of it, there may be a reason for that
Ooh, nearly forgot, on the glove theme, have invested in some Gordini Goose gloves. Warmest around apparently. Well, we'll just see about that. Off to stick my hands in the deep freeze. Will let you know the results of my oh so scientific experiment later.
96 days to go. Need a symbol that translates as 'so excited i'm going to burst'.

Year the fall line gear guide is good, but I would also recommend downloading the gear guide from freeskier.com too, the website also got some cool vids.

well finally gone and brought some new skis...
Ended up changing my mind on my origonal choice, deciding that Im just too heavy for such a short ski. So Ive ended up ordering a pair of 2007 K2 Seths in a 189cm (a bargin for under 300 quid with bindings!)
should hopefully be here before the end of the week, and I cant wait to get them into some powder and test them out properly! (I will not be tempted into testing them in MK, cant see it being particually fun trying to turn in there on such long skis.......)
