FERNIE 2 & 3 WEEK - Page 1 of 2 Goto page 1, 2  Next- Post new topic

Hi everybody!

Well, I guess I'll be the first to say 'Hi' and introduce myself, 'cos one of you may well be sharing a room with me in a few month's time!

I'm Tom, 26 (turning into a doddering old 27 year old whilst I'm in Fernie.) I only took up snowboarding at the beginning of the year as something to do on a Sunday morning. On a whim I took three beginner lessons at Suffolk Ski Centre and surprised myself by enjoying it so much that I've been going back to their dry-slope once or twice a week for the past seven months. Snowboarding has become a proper obsession but I still feel a bit of a poser telling people I can 'snowboard' when I've not yet been on any real snow!

NonStop appeared in the ads on my Facebook and after a quick look round the site I decided to quit playing around at snowboarding and get taught how to do it properly - with a CASI qualification to try for as an additional motivation to get good at it.

Yope!

Hei hei guys!

Thomas, where are you from? There are many of you on Facebook, heh. My name is Erik Fendik (there´s just one me on Facebook) and I was born in Czechoslovakia. Actually, now it is Slovakia. I´ve been living, studying and working in Norway since 2006 though. So I´ll bring a bit of international feeling into our group. Wink

I am a student taking a gap semester. Therefore I am (unfortunately) limited only to 3-week ski-instructor course. However, I am incredibly looking forward the powder in Fernie.

I started to ski when I was 3. I´ve done mostly the piste skiing and so I hope to improve my off-piste skills. It´s going to be fun because I like icy surfaces, speed, hard skies with racing boots and radius 18. Quite a difference... Laughing

I´ve never taken lessons though. I´m a kind of self-taught style but I feel there´s a problem somewhere out there. The course will hopefully help me and I´ll manage to gain the CASI 1 license. Then I hope to find a campus job on my college´s own ski slope and get level 2 somehow...

How did I get to know about NonStop? I was looking for a specific instructor course. It had to be short-term due to my packed gap semester program. I had November, December and January available for a course only. Most of the courses I found would not finish before the end of January. I´m starting on an American college in February 2, 2009. Furthermore, the European licenses (e.g. Austrian one from St. Anton by Peak Leaders) would not help me overseas, as I´m going to live there at least 4 years. So Canada and NonStop won! Thanks Google. Razz

Got to go back to the work now; see you!

PS: Guess my age.. ;e)

Hi Erik, I'm the one from Ipswich in Suffolk - but here's a link to my Facebook profile:

http://www.facebook.com/people/Tom_Mountford/615760030

I'm really pleased there are people from other countries coming along! As well as snowboarding I'm really looking forward to meeting loads of other people and making some new friends. I didn't go to university and didn't take a gap-year of any kind, so I feel like I missed out on some really fun experiences... which I'm making up for now!

I had originally decided on doing a six month stay in Whistler on a work visa, but when I told a few people about my idea they were totally horrified and I soon figured out that I would come home to find myself unemployed, broke and single! Smile However, I still wanted to do something really exciting and out of character, so I started looking for a snowboarding course that would required less of a time commitment, and when I found that the Fernie course was at a time I am usually very quiet at work, and would be able to get the time off, I signed up straight away!

I know what you mean about being self-taught; after my first three lessons, which let me use the dry-slope unsupervised, I just got on with it by myself. I've always been the sort of guy who has always thrown away instruction manuals and just figured out stuff by myself, so I have most likely taught myself quite a few wrong ways to do things! Recently I've rediscovered how useful it is to have someone who really knows what they are doing show me how to improve at things, so I want to do the same for my snowboarding.

See you on Facebook Erik, and I promise I'll buy you a drink in Fernie!

Tom

Hi everyone,

My name's Clive - I will be joining you guys as well. Although I will be doing the ski instructors course. erm... age - I am a spring chicken at 37 Sad Ha ha...
But I know I won't be the oldest on the forum for long as a mate of mine will be joining you on the snowboard course and he's older than me (just)

I'm South African - being skiing on and off since I was 7 and like everyone it seems - full of bad habits. But that should all be corrected at Fernie! Can't wait to start, it seems so far off!

Phew... Sounds like there's going to be a string of parties around the new year. All good! Another couple of beers coming up!

Don't worry Clive. Your still a youngster as far as I'm concerned. I'm Willie and looking forward to the 3 week instructors course. My wife, Marian is doing the improvement course. It's my treat to myself after taking early retirement from teaching. We're from Newry in N Ireland.
All this partying!!! I just hope we can keep up.
Look forward to meeting you all, Tom, Eric etc. [/b][/quote]

Cool!

Awesome treat Willie, good on ya! Have you been skiing/boarding long? I feel like a right newbie having only taken up snowboarding eight months ago... seems like everyone so far has been doing it since they were knee high! Embarassed Still, like someone clever said "It's not how good you are, it's how good you want to be" Wink

Also good to see that there will be all ages on this trip.

Hi All, My name is Jermain Williams but all my friends call me Jazz. Im 33 and I live in Dublin, Ireland.

Still a bit of a snowboarding Newbie with just two and a bit weeks under my belt. I spent a week in Andorra and Austria so far this year. The runs in andorra were only ok but the night life rocked. In Kaprun it was the other way around, night life sucked but snowboarding at 3,000 meters was brilliant. My goal for the 3 weeks is simple, have fun, Improve my boarding and hopefully make some new friends along the way. Very Happy

Any of you guys heading to Nonstock? im signed up to go, sounds like a bit of crack. My facebook page is

http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=726281202 so please add me as a friend. Hope to chat to you all soon and maybe meet up with some of you at Nonstock Cool

Sorry for not replying sooner Tom. Was on holiday [playing golf] for a few days. I've been skiing for over 25 years, taking school groups every year, some adult groups and enjoying freebies[inspection trips] every Easter. Not any more now I'm retired, but I've been very lucky and I only started at age 27. I'm now 55.
Scott's right about the powder Razz
Good to have another "Paddy" Jazz.

Hello to everybody!

Really late on the uptake with this blogging lark, largely due to my laziness. My name's Si, and I'm doing the 3 week baording instructor course in dec. Living in north london at the moment , and getting itchy feet from roughly 7am until 1am everyday!

Looking forward to meeting everyone. Who's else will be joining me?!

Easy,
Si
